Lab 8

This is the close up picture. I used 70mm and f5.6 to gain the bokeh effect in this image.

This is the low contrast image of the white hoodie and background.

This image shows the contrast of highlights and shadows.

Lab 7

The white balance worked well in this image. The colours are the same as they were to the naked eye.

I decided to edit this image because it was shot through the glass of a door so I could get the right balance of it.

This image is colder than the previous one which helps the viewer understand how cold it was out that day.

In my opinion this images is perfect overall in terms of white balance.

Mid-term Break Assignment

Photo 1

This picture shows the shallow DOF (Depth of Field). To take this picture i went into Dublin city centre in Temple Bar just outside of the Thunder Road Cafe. I used my Sony A7II with the 28-70mm kit lens to take the picture. The settings i used to the picture are:

• Exposure Mode: Manual
• Manual Focus Mode
• Focal Length: 70mm 
• Shutter Speed: 1/13
• Aperture Value: f/5.6
• ISO: 1000

I used manual mode to focus on the bricks because the camera struggled to focus on it on auto focus. I chose to take the picture outside of the Thunder Road cafe because of the illuminating neon lights on the street. I like this picture because of the bokeh produced by the blue/pink/orange neon lights in the background and because the corner of the wall is on third of the picture (rule of thirds). If I was to take this picture again I would use a faster shutter speed to expose it better.

This picture shows the creative use of shutter speed. I took this picture in town on O'Connell Street near the bridge. The settings used to achieve this picture are:

• Auto Focus Mode
• Focal Length: 28mm 
• Shutter Speed: 1/30
• Aperture Value: f/10
• ISO: 200

I chose to take a picture of cyclists because previous to this picture I kept taking pictures of moving busses and it didn't look good enough due to the size of the busses so i decided to take a few pictures of cyclists and it turned out much better. What I like about this picture is that the cyclist is in focus and the rest of the picture is motion blur. What I don't like about the picture is that there's nothing special about it. If I was to use shutter speed to create something like this again I would try do it in a better location.

This Street Photography picture was taken on O'Connell street. I chose to take a picture of those two men talking through the two umbrellas in the foreground because of the contrast between the grey rainy streets and the punchy yellow jackets and umbrellas. The settings used to achieve this picture are:

• Focal Length: 51mm 
• Shutter Speed: 1/200
• Aperture Value: f/4.5
• ISO: 1000

I chose to go town to take the street photo on a rainy day because in my opinion the rain gives the picture a very moody feeling which is what I like in street photography. I found it hard to compose the picture well and thats what I came with. I like that your eyes are drawn to the two men in yellow and that there are two umbrellas in the foreground that bends the background well. What I would have done different with this style of photography (Street Photography) is that I would have spent more time thinking of a better composition.

Using the rule of thirds I placed Nathans eye (the model) on two lines of the rule of thirds where they intersect, that draws your attention to Nathan's eye. The settings used to achieve this picture are:

• Shutter Speed: 1/50
• Aperture Value: f/4.5
• ISO: 400

What I like about this picture is that is very simple but interesting. I also like the shadows on the models face and how the umbrella covers the background that prevents the viewer from getting distracted from the background. Taking it on a rainy day also help with giving the moody/dramatic feeling, what I wanted to achieve with this picture. If I was to take the same picture again I would make sure the light comes on the models face from a 45° angle to give a better dramatic look with the use of shadows to the picture.

This picture shows the use of Negative Space. Walking near the river Liffey just outside of temple bar  in town on a nice evening I saw this red bicycle that I thought it would be good for a picture. The picture was taken when it was dark out so the settings used to achieve this picture are:

• Focal Length: 70mm 
• Shutter Speed: 1/80
• Aperture Value: f/5.6
• ISO: 1000

I like the red contrasty bicycle that helps to guide your eye to the main subject. I also like that the colours in the background are similar to the main subject which balances out the image. I'm not happy that i had to use such a high ISO that made the picture slightly grainy. I also wish the bicycle was placed a slightly bit lower to give more negative/empty space (using rule of thirds).

This is my own Creative Shot. I took this picture just outside of Arnotts on Henry's street. They had the Christmas lights up and I thought that it would be a great opportunity to take a picture like this with the use of bokeh. The settings used to achieve this picture are:

• Focal Length: 50mm 
• Shutter Speed: 1/50
• Aperture Value: f/4.5
• ISO: 400

With this picture I wanted to have a picture into another picture, having a frame into the picture. I got inspired by one of my favourite photographers on instagram called @northborders. What i like about this picture is that the screen of the phone shows the actual image. I also like the bokeh around the hand and phone which isolates the main subject in the picture. If I was to take this picture again i would make sure the image is well exposed and that the hand and phone is positioned straight.

 

My pictures using composition

This picture was taken with a leaf in front of the lens to give some dept of filed and makes the model be the main focus.

This image was taken using the rule of thirds. placing the model on one of the line made him become the main focus.

The leading lines of the bench helps the viewer focus on the main subject.

I like this picture due to the dynamic range made by the boxing bag and the subject.

Autumn Pictures

I chose this view because the autumn colours really pop out.I also like the separation of the foreground and background in this picture.

This picture was taken on the moment which shows how focused the model was on what he was doing.

The orange leafs and the still birds show a very slow and steady capture of the time of the year.

I love the mixture of the leading lines produced by the leaf with the bokeh both in the foreground and background of the subject.

I love how all the similar couloured itemes go together in this picture. Having similar colours in it makes it more pleasing to the eye.
